Students report that AI reliance "can be quite hindering to someone's learning" and acknowledge that "if you become dependent on it, it will hinder your future works or capabilities". They see the trap. They just can't figure out how to escape it—especially when every incentive in their academic environment rewards the polished output rather than the messy process of genuine learning.

And what happens when these students enter workplaces where AI might not be available, where problems are too novel for current AI to handle, or where the cost of AI-generated errors is catastrophic? They'll be intellectually helpless.

What We're Actually Preparing Them For

The future workplace won't reward people who can prompt AI effectively. That's table stakes—the minimum entry fee. Students who are highly reliant on AI-based learning experiences may lose motivation and intrinsic drive to learn and solve problems independently, as AI does the thinking for them. We're not just creating a skills gap—we're creating a motivation gap. And motivation is far harder to remediate than knowledge.

I've seen this play out in devastating ways during internship placements. Companies give these AI-dependent students real problems to solve. The students freeze. They've never had to sit with uncertainty. They've never had to generate solutions from first principles. They've never developed the frustration tolerance that separates professionals from pretenders.

The Way Forward Isn't Backward

The solution isn't less AI. It's more friction. More forced cognitive struggle before the AI assist. More emphasis on process over product. More assessment of reasoning rather than output.

Students who simply regurgitate AI-generated information remain at lower learning levels focused only on remembering and understanding factual information, demonstrating that AI may be a potential barrier to achieving learning outcomes, specifically critical thinking, for students who take on a performance goal structure.

What if we required students to document their thinking process before consulting AI? What if we assessed their ability to critique AI-generated content rather than their ability to generate it? What if we created assignments where AI assistance is available but insufficient—where genuine insight is the bottleneck, not information access or articulation?

The Stakes Couldn't Be Higher

We're at an inflection point. The decisions we make now about how students engage with AI will shape the cognitive capabilities of an entire generation of professionals.

Over-reliance on AI may diminish interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence, leading to social isolation, and while AI can enhance efficiency and personalize learning, excessive dependence may compromise essential interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence.

The loop is tightening. Students increasingly believe that corporate success means being good at using AI. They're not entirely wrong—but they're catastrophically incomplete. The differentiator won't be AI fluency. It'll be cognitive resilience, creative courage, and the hard-won wisdom that comes from struggling through problems you don't initially know how to solve.
