Thomson Reuters (Westlaw/Legal Research) - Despite the 16% crash, their core moat is intact. Morningstar analysts noted that Claude's legal plugin importantly has nothing to do with legal research, which is the core value proposition and wide-moat foundation of Thomson and RELX's legal businesses.

Their decades of curated case law, legal analysis, and judicial data can't be replicated by AI. The contract review tools are threatened—the research databases aren't.

LinkedIn - The professional network. Data network effects represent another defensible position. Platforms where the software improves as more users contribute data—think LinkedIn's professional network, Zillow's real estate database, or Indeed's job marketplace—maintain advantages that AI cannot easily circumvent.

AI can help you write better LinkedIn posts. It can't recreate the network of 900 million professionals.

Why They're Safe:

These companies control something AI fundamentally needs: proprietary data or network effects that can't be bootstrapped. Moats matter more than speed. From stories to cash flows. From distant promises to near-term delivery. From broad exposure to selective positioning.

AI makes them more valuable, not less. They become the infrastructure that AI tools build on top of.

Stock Market Evidence: After initial panic, these stocks recovered faster than the broader software index. Investors realized: these companies aren't being disrupted—they're becoming the platforms AI tools integrate with.

TIER 2: THE ADAPTERS

Companies with one strong moat + ability to integrate AI

Examples:

Electronic health records with decades of patient data, clinical workflows, and regulatory compliance. AI can enhance Epic—it can't replace the HIPAA-compliant system of record hospitals depend on.

Veeva (Life Sciences) - Clinical trial management software with proprietary pharmaceutical data. Deep domain expertise meets regulatory requirements. The workflows are complex enough that "good enough" AI isn't acceptable.

Intuit (Small Business) - TurboTax and QuickBooks own the financial data for millions of small businesses. Tax preparation AI needs to integrate with this data—it can't replace the system where it lives.

Why They're Surviving:

TIER 3: THE SPECIALISTS

Deep vertical SaaS with compound workflows

Hyper-specialized for specific industries
Multi-module systems that interlock
Process knowledge embedded in software
Customer workflows deeply integrated

Examples:

AI-embedded software boosts productivity inside familiar systems; AI-native software rewires workflows, flips pricing from seats to outcomes, and is where the real disruption (and margin expansion) lives.

TIER 4: THE WOUNDED

Horizontal SaaS with some switching costs

Defining Characteristics:

Broad horizontal tools (project management, CRM, collaboration)
Some network effects or embedded workflows
But no proprietary data moat
Vulnerable to AI-powered consolidation

Examples:

Atlassian (Jira, Confluence) - Project management and documentation. Teams have workflows built around these tools, creating switching costs. But there's no proprietary data moat—just familiarity.

AI could replicate these workflows. The question is: will teams go through the pain of switching?

Monday.com, Asana, ClickUp - Similar position. They have embedded workflows and team habits, but AI-powered project management could be "good enough" at a fraction of the price.

Slack - In a SaaS model, AI agents can undermine "intra-company" network effects like Slack by making the interface invisible. Agents can pull data from disparate systems without the user ever opening the app.

Communication platform with network effects, but AI agents might make the interface irrelevant. If agents can pull information without opening Slack, what's the moat?

Why They're Wounded:

Entire categories of "integration platforms" and "middleware" companies are built on connecting disparate systems. There's no fallback position. They don't own data. They don't own workflows. They just connect things—and that's becoming free.

Market Outlook: These companies will either pivot dramatically or get acquired at distressed valuations.

TIER 7: THE WALKING DEAD

Pure workflow UI with no switching costs

Defining Characteristics:

Generic workflow tools
No embedded data or processes
Easy to switch away from
Completely replicable by AI

Examples:

Generic form builders - Typeform, JotForm competitors. AI can generate forms. What's the moat?

Founder Advice: If you're building in this category, pivot now. The market has spoken.

The Capital Is Following the Thesis

Private equity and venture capital are already acting on this taxonomy.

Private credit funds are quietly reducing software exposure, tightening underwriting standards, and paying much closer attention to customer concentration, churn sensitivity, and contract durability.

What PE firms are doing:

Mission-critical, workflow-embedded, ROI-provable software still gets done. Seat-based, "nice-to-have," easily replicated tools become much harder to finance.

They're bifurcating their portfolios. Keep the systems of record and vertical specialists. Quietly exit the workflow tools and integration platforms.

What VCs are doing:

The venture capital community is responding with notable caution. Investment in traditional SaaS startups has declined sharply, with many firms explicitly stating they will no longer fund companies whose primary differentiation comes from applying AI to workflow automation or data analysis.

The calculus is brutal: if a startup's core functionality can be replicated by an AI agent using publicly available models and APIs, there's no defensible moat worth venture funding.

Growth-stage checks are concentrating around emergent category leaders such as Adept, Runway, Glean, Ramp, and Cresta, and exits are reaccelerating as incumbents buy capability and control-plane moats.

The bottom line is a stark choice. The SaaS landscape is being sorted. Companies that fail to integrate AI meaningfully, build defensible vertical positions, or manage capital with discipline will be left behind.

Apply the new filter ruthlessly:

Hold: Tier 1-2 (systems of record, proprietary data moats)
Monitor closely: Tier 3-4 (vertical specialists, adapting incumbents)
Exit: Tier 5-7 (workflow tools, integration platforms, generic UI)

As an investor, I'm not asking "will AI kill this company?" anymore. I'm asking: "Is this company getting any of the incremental AI spend, or is it funding the AI spend?"

The winners are capturing AI budget. The losers are having their budgets harvested to pay for AI.

If you're an enterprise buyer:

Now is the time to renegotiate. Your vendors are terrified. Use that leverage.

Ask every vendor:

"How does your product integrate with AI assistants?"

The Uncomfortable Truth

Here's what nobody wants to admit: The era of easy SaaS growth is over. It's been over since 2021. We're just finally admitting it.

The SaaS business model that created trillion dollars in value was predicated on:

High switching costs from complex software
Limited competition in vertical niches
Per-seat pricing that scaled with customer growth
Network effects from integrated ecosystems

AI is systematically dismantling each of these:

Reduced switching costs (migration is easier)
Infinite competition (anyone can build with AI)
Seat-based pricing under pressure (fewer humans needed)
Network effects compressed (AI agents make interfaces less important)

The drop in software stocks in 2026 is not a glitch. It is a correction of a decade-long mispricing of digital assets. The belief that code alone grants infinite leverage has been falsified by the rise of generative AI.

We've been repricing software from "infinite leverage" to "commodity + data/network value."

The companies with real data moats and network effects survive. The rest? They were always just a nice UI away from commoditization. AI just made it obvious.

What Happens Next

At this stage, it is genuinely difficult to know which application-layer and SaaS players will ultimately emerge as winners or losers. Questions around what AI will replace, who retains pricing power, and who absorbs the costs of adoption are still being worked through.

The sorting will take 2-3 years. We're in the early innings.

What to watch:

Q1-Q2 2026 earnings - Do SaaS companies show actual revenue impact from AI, or is it still future-looking?
Enterprise adoption rates - Are companies actually deploying Claude plugins at scale, or just testing?
Seat count trends - Are per-seat SaaS companies seeing headcount-driven churn?
Pricing model pivots - Which companies successfully transition away from per-seat pricing?
M&A activity - Do struggling SaaS companies get acquired at distressed valuations?
